A little piece of France in London Steeped in history, Le Beaujolais resides at an address that has managed to stay in French hands ever since the war.

On the ground floor is London's oldest French wine bar whilst our downstairs restaurant is a member's only Club.

Le Beaujolais remains a bastion of all that is French; since 1972 we have been providing a genuinely  French atmosphere, caught between the vibrant quarters of Soho and Covent Garden, in what we feel is a little piece of France tucked away in the heart of London.

We are passionate about offering an authentic and rustic experience of the French terroir, from working with small suppliers in France to the traditional old fashioned recipes we use.

Le Beaujolais is a piece of French history, hidden away at 25 Litchfield Street.

I live in Notting Hill but when I escape into town I regularly end up at Beaujolais for a great lunch, usually Toulouse sausages and Puy lentils with mash.

It's not expensive and Pascal is a great host, from Puys des Domes area in fact.

This smaller establishment has been in French hands since the Second World War, when it was the Free French Officers’ Club (veterans still hold reunions there).

The wine bar at street level is unmistakably French, is open to the public and serves most of the menu available in the basement dining room.

Here is the unfussy secret of the establishment, being truly French in character, and offering good, plain, French cooking to a very high standard, indeed.

Thirty French cheeses are offered, every day, all in prime condition, as they are consumed, rapidly.

Jean-Yves may, however, admit as his personal, paying guests, members of the Chaine who can identify themselves as such.

Le Beaujolais, West End

A tip-off from the Institut Francais brought me down a side street off Charring Cross Road to the red fronted Le Beaujolais bar.

Established first as a restaurant in 1972 and eight years later becoming a bar, it is the oldest French wine bar in London, but management prefer word of mouth to London listings.

The wine bar attracts young and old, Francophone and Francophile.

Arsenal supporter, Pascal Perry, has managed the bar for three years and is offering out salmon pate on toast.

But for those who consider the French and English as different as chalk and Camembert then best go elsewhere: as Michele Grondin, co-owner of the bar says: “Le Beaujolais, c’est l’amitie.”

A long-standing wine bar and restaurant on Litchfield Street, Le Beaujolais is well known for its selection of French wines and cheeses.

The restaurant downstairs is a members' only venue but the ground floor bar is open to all.

The food menu ranges from charcuterie boards, homemade quiches and pâté to boeuf bourguignon and hachis parmentier - a French shepherd's pie.

The wine list is exclusively French, and broken down by region.
